“Luca, you finally agreed to see me,” Raven said the second he walked into the conference room. She went to touch him, but she stopped when Luca stepped back.

“You have five minutes to tell me why you’re here,” he told her.

“I can’t get over how good you look,” she said.

Luca sighed and sat down, then leisurely crossed one leg over the other and stared at Raven, waiting for her to explain why she was so persistent in seeing him.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” Raven asked.

Instead of answering her, Luca looked at his watch and then said in an even tone. “You’re wasting the minutes you have left.”

“I just reconnected with my parents,” Raven said with a shy smile.

“That’s good for you,” Luca said.

During their time together, Luca had only met Raven’s parents once, and that was just after Seven was born. Not long after, Raven and her parents had a falling out, and she refused to see or speak to them. No matter how often Luca asked what happened between them, neither Raven nor her parents would tell him, so he left it alone. However, he had to admit Raven had not looked too broken up by the fact that she was not on speaking terms with her parents. As far as Luca knew, Raven’s parents weren’t filthy rich, but they lived a good life and provided Raven with anything she desired.

“Well, I reconnected with my mom. My dad died a couple of months ago,” Raven continued.

“You have two minutes,” Luca said. Raven seemed nervous, but he paid it no mind.

“Aren’t you going to ask about Frank?”

Luca stared at her and did not say a word. He could care less about his ex-best friend.

“He’s in jail,” she said. “He got arrested a few months ago for a whole host of shit.” Tears pooled in her eyes, but Luca felt nothing. “He was a dangerous man, Luc. He…I…” Raven stuttered, looking away from him, and the longer she took to tell him what she wanted, the more frustrated he grew.

“Look at me,” Luca ordered, and instantly her eyes snapped to him. A sensation rose up inside Luca as unforeseen power entered the room while he stared at Raven for a few seconds, noticing her eyes glossing over, as if she was being hypnotized the longer she looked at him. “Tell me what you want. Why are you here?”

“I need you to pretend to be married to me again,” Raven responded in a monotone voice.

Luca furrowed his brows, staring at her hunched shoulders. “Why?” He did not know what happened or what came over her to cause her to answer his question.

“So that I don’t go to jail?”

Luca wanted to be shocked that Raven had done something against the law, but she was no longer the woman he thought he’d known after she started sleeping with Frank. “What does you going to jail have to do with me? We haven’t seen each other for five years, Raven. We’re no longer married. Hell, we’re not even considered friends.
